I wish so much that I could help Joe. It hurts a lot that I can't.

Seems to me, there's a lot of people I can't help, lately. I'm not used to feeling that way. It's kind of icky. So I am letting Miss Mara teach me how to make cookies.

Miss Mara is certainly good at that. As you are good at helping, Thomas. I'm sure the time will come when you can do Joe a lot of good. But as I said to Abby, I think he actually needs someone who isn't so close to the matter right now.

There's cookie dough in the kitchen. Do you want some? I could feed it to you in a provocative way, while still remaining proper because your little sister is present!

I think Joe did amazingly well to keep helping people as he did until now. I suppose if that was what he was running on, it was bound to fall apart eventually. But he seemed to be getting better, rather than running on empty...

I can only imagine how you must be feeling now. The closest thing I've had in my life was when we thought Tasha's parents had been killed, and I was helping her through that. But what Joe is going through... Goddess, I wish there were something any of us could do. I hate to see so much hurt.
